Welcome to The Insect Hotel

A boutique retreat for the discerning six-legged traveller.

The Insect Hotel — handcrafted sanctuary in the garden

Tired of the hustle and buzz of the hive? Looking for a quiet corner of the world where the fynbos stretches to the mountains and the sea breeze carries the scent of wild rosemary?

The Insect Hotel is a handcrafted sanctuary nestled in the heart of the Western Cape, offering solitude, shelter, and some of the finest foraging grounds this side of the peninsula.

Why Choose The Insect Hotel?

Purpose-built for flight arrivals — No roads, no check-in desk. Just land and settle in.

Wild, seasonal dining — We don't do room service. Our guests forage freely among indigenous fynbos, wildflowers, and flowering shrubs that change with the seasons. Every month brings a new menu, curated by nature herself.

Honest weather, honestly stated — Winters are wet. Summers are dry. Some days it blows a gale. We believe in transparency, not climate control.

Community living, solo style — You'll share the hotel with fellow insects, spiders, lizards, and the odd curious bird. But your nook is your own. This is a place for the solitary soul — the mason bee who prefers her own company, the lacewing who likes a quiet evening.

Stay your way — Whether you're passing through for a night, settling in for the season, or looking for a permanent address, we have a space for you.

The Setting

The hotel nestled among the foliage

The Insect Hotel sits in a landscape where the mountains meet the sea. Fynbos dominates the terrain — that extraordinary, fire-adapted shrubland found nowhere else on Earth. Pockets of forest offer shade and shelter, while the coastline provides a dramatic backdrop to your stay.

The local community is welcoming. The neighbours are mostly plants, birds, and the occasional mongoose. It's peaceful here.

Who We're Looking For

Our ideal guest:

  • Can fly (sorry, ground beetles — we love you, but access is tricky)
  • Values solitude over swarm life
  • Forages independently and appreciates seasonal variety
  • Doesn't mind sharing with other wildlife
  • Accepts that housekeeping happens — the hotel gets a tidy-up now and then
  • Embraces the weather — rain, wind, sun, and everything in between
